After about a year of procrastinating (it's something I'm frightfully good at), I finally got around to reading Chris Guillebeau's "The Art of Non-Conformity", and I can't tell you how many red flags raced up the flagpole for me. Of course, I mean that in a good way. It was sort of like one Aha! moment after another. I was at first drawn to the whole self-help vibe on the cover which made three very attractive statements: Set Your Own Rules, Live the Life You Want and Change the World. I ask you? Who could resist?
Two of the most magical pages for me proved to be page 118-119, where he has a list entitled 'The One-Year, Self-Directed, Alternative Graduate School Experience'. If one has the money to pursue a graduate school to the tune of $30k and up, that's just grand. I just don't happen to have access to that type of capital. At least, not yet. The list has suggestions such as "Read at least 30 nonfiction books and 20 classic novels." Another, for lack of a better word, assignment--he recommends starting a blog, creating a basic posting schedule and sticking with it for the entire year. Voila! As you can see, I've started the blog and as of tomorrow, I'm off to the library. There will be more to come, I promise you.
